Ten kidnapped international peacekeepers were released on Monday following negotiations with their captors, security sources told Ahram Online. Early on Monday, Bedouin tribesmen in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula kidnapped ten Fijian members of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), which is mandated with monitoring the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace agreement. In return for the captives, the kidnappers had demanded that Egyptian authorities release a number of their fellow tribesmen from prison, Egyptian security sources said. The Fijians had been passing through the Auja border crossing when they were kidnapped outside the village of Um Kattaf on the Auja-Arish highway. According to security sources, all the released Fijians are currently safe and in good health. The Sinai Peninsula has become increasing restive since the popular uprising that led to the ouster of Egypt's longstanding president Hosni Mubarak early last year and threw Egypt's security apparatus into disarray.
