Ahly file complaint against referee following Sundowns keeper horror tackle
Published in Ahram Online on 16 - 05 - 2021

Egyptian giants Ahly have filed an official complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against referee Maguette claiming they deserved a penalty kick and a red card following a horror tackle from keeper Denis Onyango against striker Mohamed Sherif during Saturday's game in the Champions League quarter finals.

The defending Champions beat their South African visitors 2-0 in a game that witnessed a lot of refereeing controversies.

"In our complaint we named a few mistakes the referee committed like omitting a penalty for Mohamed Sherif and an expulsion for Mamelodi Sunowns keeper who used excessive force against our striker in the area," a statement read on the club's website.

Sherif infiltrated in the area and tried to intercept the ball on his chest when Sundowns Ugandan keeper Denis Onyango came out flying feet-first to brutally kick the striker in his back.

Both players were down on the pitch and the referee whistled a foul for Onyango.

Later at night Sherif published on his instagram account a picture of his back with big bruises.

In the statement, Ahly said the decisions of the referee have prejudiced the outcome of the game adding that Ndiaye did not protect their players while giving them unnecessary bookings.

The Reds are set to face Sundowns in the return leg in Pretoria next Saturday.
