Egypt detected 712 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing total cases since the outbreak last year to 202,843. The health ministry reported 46 fatalities, bringing the deaths toll to 12,041. 322 patients have been discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, bringing recoveries to 155,016. Egypt began vaccinating priority groups in March under a wider rollout of the vaccination program after it concluded the vaccination of the country's medical staff. It seeks to secure vaccines for the overpopulous nation as it continues to expand its immunization program. It currently administers the Chinese Sinopharm and the British-Swedish Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines, both of which were granted emergency use authorisation by authorities earlier this year. Egypt received on Wednesday around 854,400 doses of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine as part of the COVAX agreement. The batch is part of an advance purchase agreement of 40 million doses provided in cooperation with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the World Health Organization (WHO), the UNICEF and the World Bank. The delivery came few months after Egypt received 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in end January.
