Wasat Party to host meeting of presidential candidates to discuss how to avoid splitting 'pro-revolution' vote Monday; Parliament to discuss law banning old regime figures from politics Tuesday
The moderate Islamist Wasat Party is to host a meeting Monday to discuss backing a single 'pro-revolution' presidential candidate.
Presidential candidates Mohamed Selim El-Awa, Amr Moussa, Hisham El-Bastawisi, Abu-Ezz El-Hariri and Ayman Nour are expected to attend the meeting at the Wasat Party's headquarters in the Mokattam district of Cairo.
On Tuesday, Parliament is expected to discuss the draft law presented by Wasat Party MP Essam Sultan, proposing a ban on remnants of the former regime from state positions for five years.
Sultan stated Sunday that the People's Assembly was able to activate the "Disenfranchisement Law," which isolated remnants of the former regime by the Free Officers Movement after1952 Revolution, within forty-eight hours.
Several presidential hopefuls, including Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, Khairat El-Shater and Khaled Ali, have expressed strong opposition to the return of Omar Suleiman to the presidential race. Ahmed Shafiq has expressed his support for Mubarak's former spy chief.
On Monday, El-Awa asserted that Suleiman would not gain popular support.
El-Awa further added that if he became president, he would make sure that Suleiman was among the first people to be tried for his crimes during the Mubarak era.
