AUC to host Mohamed Mahmoud St. graffiti artists
The artists behind Mohamed Mahmoud Street graffiti will speak on the subject of 'visualising the revolution' at AUC's Tahrir Square campus on Monday
Published in Ahram Online on 30 - 03 - 2012

On Monday, 2 April, the American University in Cairo (AUC) will host the artists responsible for much of the political graffiti that now adorns Cairo's Mohamed Mahmoud Street.
A lecture will be delivered by Luxor-based artist Ammar Abo Bakr, who came to Cairo – along with his student, Alaa Awad – in early February. The artists spray-painted the walls during the clashes between protestors and security forces that followed last month's Port Said football tragedy.
Abo Bakr painted murals depicting those killed in the stadium violence, while Awad painted images of a pharaonic theme.
The painting of the flashpoint street continued for weeks, ultimately stretching from the walls of AUC's main campus to those of the library and nearby schools. In the following weeks, the artists were joined by Hanaa El-Degham, who tirelessly painted grim-looking men and women carrying butane cylinders.
Abo Bakr, Awad and El-Degham will all deliver lectures on Monday, along with journalist Ahmed Aboul Hassan.
