Traffic accidents in Egypt top Upper House agenda The Shura Council's next meeting scheduled for Sunday, January 16, will feature a hot discussion about the rising traffic accidents in Egypt
The Egyptian Shura Council, or upper house of parliament, has warned against the impact of the rising number of road traffic accidents, especially on tourism, one of the main sources of national income. The discussion will revolve around the council's Transport Committee Report, in which they discussed the effect of the increasing number of accidents on Egypt. The report also includes recommendations on how to make Egypt's roads safer and curb a problem which, it says, has damaged Egypt's reputation as a 'beacon of culture and civilization'. The Council, which will discuss the report in their meeting scheduled for Sunday, January 16, called for a national media campaign to highlight the problem and the loss of life and money accidents cause, along with the negative impact they have on the national economy. The report pointed out that it is important to spread awareness about proper traffic laws and safety measures, and to improve driving habits. The campaign will include both visual and print media as well as cooperation with civil society organisations. The report also added that amending traffic laws is one of the most effective means to curb accidents that have become a daily occurrence in the country. It added it is to also vital to educate the traffic police on the proper laws so that they can address the violations immediately. They further asserted that the teaching of new drivers in driving schools should be stricter, and more regulations should govern the issuing of licenses. In the last three days, at least 55 died, and 255 were injured due to road accidents in Egypt.
