Four people were hospitalised on Tuesday in Alexandria after eating spoilt fesikh (fermented mullet fish), bringing the total number of reported cases of fesikh food poisoning in the city over the past 10 days to 70, including one fatality, according to Maha Ghanem, director of the Alexandria Poison Centre. The Alexandria Poison Centre warned citizens last September against eating fessikh, even if prepared at home, due to the significant increase in food poisoning cases from fessikh in Alexandria. According to Alaa Eid, advisor to the minister of health on endemic preventive affairs, the poisoning is caused by a dangerous type of bacteria which produces deadly toxins that can cause severe injury, especially to children.
