Ahly thump South Sudan's Atlabara 9-0 to set club record
Published in Ahram Online on 23 - 08 - 2019

Ahly began life after coach Martin Lasarte with a club record 9-0 victory over South Sudan's Atlabara on Friday to reach the African Champions League second round with an emphatic 13-0 aggregate win.
The Red Devils' biggest ever African win included a hat-trick from winger Hussein El-Shahat and doubles from striker Salah Mohsen, who made a rare start, and defensive midfielder Hamdi Fathi.
Ahly's previous record for the biggest continental win was a 6-0 win, which they set on two occasions -- against Kenya's A.F.C. Leopards in 1978 and Uganda's SC Villa in 2004.
Friday's huge scoreline will go some way towards easing the disappointment of a 1-0 loss against Pyramids FC in the Egypt Cup round of 16 last week, which ended Ahly's hopes of winning the domestic double and led to the sacking of Uruguayan coach Lasarte.
Mohamed Youssef, a former Ahly boss who acted as Lasarte's assistant, took over on an interim basis as the club look for a foreign replacement.
Against Atlabara, veteran right-back Ahmed Fathi was also on target, with the visitors' Mostafa Selim completing the rout with an own goal nine minutes from time.
Ahly's goals included tap-ins from Mohsen, who finished off some flowing moves, and a superb piledriver from Hamdi Fathi.
