Zamalek refuse to face Young Africans in one-legged Champions League tie Zamalek say the second leg of their Champions League preliminary round game must be held in Egypt despite the ongoing turmoil in the country
Zamalek reject the notion of facing Tanzania's Young Africans in a one-legged tie in the preliminary round of the CAF champions League, assistant coach Ismail Youssef said on Wednesday. Last week's Port Said tragedy, which left at least 74 dead after Masry fans attacked their Ahly counterparts in an Egyptian Premier League game, forced an indefinite suspension of domestic football activities in the country. Reports said Young Africans requested that their two-legged tie against Zamalek be trimmed to one leg. “(Head coach Hassan) Shehata insisted to play the second leg in Egypt, even if it will be behind closed doors,'' Ismail Youssef told Ahram online on Wednesday. Zamalek, who were ordered to play two homes matches outside Cairo due to the crowd troubles which marred their game against Tunisia's Club Africain last year, will start their new campaign against Young Africans. The first leg will take place in Tanzania on 18 February while the second is due to be played on 2, 3 or 4 March. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will decide on Saturday whether to sanction Egyptian clubs following the Port Said deadly clashes which marked Egypt's worst-ever football disaster.
