Works by six contemporary Egyptian artists are currently on display at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
The exhibition called 'Histories of Now: Six Artists from Cairo' includes pieces by Mohamed Abla, Hala Elkoussy, Shady El-Noshokaty, Sabah Naim, Moataz Nasr, and the late Ahmed Bassiouny.
"With many of these artists exhibiting in the northeast region of the United States for the first time, 'Histories of Now' introduces viewers to the diversity of voices, concerns and approaches—both material and conceptual—found in today's Cairo; six artists presenting six contrasting visions, united only by context, creative discipline and geographic proximity," said the school's website.
Commemorating the first anniversary of Egypt's January 25 Revolution, the exhibition includes photography and video installations, multi-channel media material, and Ahmed Bassiouny's installation, which was presented at Egypt's Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale.
The exhibition also includes a number of special events. On 25 January, the first anniversary of the revolution, Shady El-Noshokaty presented a multimedia lecture and performance titled Contemporary Art and the New Egyptian Identity. On 31 January, a film Salata Baladi (An Egyptian Salad) by award-winning filmmaker Nadia Kamel, was screened.
Paralleling the exhibition, there will be a screening of Tahani Rached's documentaryThese Girls (El-Banat Dol)on 8 February and a lecture on the arts by artist Mohamed Abla on 21 February.
The event opened on 18 January and will continue until 17 March.
