UN chief congratulates Egypt on 1-year revolution anniversary Ban Ki Moon congratulates Egyptians on drive towards democracy, praises Tantawi for lifting longstanding state of emergency
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon on Tuesday congratulated Egypt on the occasion of the first anniversary of the 25 January 2011 uprising that ultimately led to the fall of the Mubarak regime. “I would like to congratulate the Egyptians for the peaceful transition of power and for their insistence on achieving democracy,” Ban said at a Wednesday press conference. The UN chief went on to praise the decision by Field-Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of Egypt's ruling military council, for lifting the country's decades-long state of emergency. Ban also stressed the importance of a peaceful transition of power in Egypt to a civilian authority.
