The general committee of the Egyptian parliament issued a statement on Sunday evening detailing several main issues discussed in its first meeting on proposed amendments to the country's constitution. Speaker Ali Abdel-Aal announced in a morning plenary session on Sunday that he had received a written petition, signed by more than fifth of the total number of MPs, asking that some articles of Egypt's 2014 constitution be amended. According to the statement, the committee meeting discussed amending articles related to the time-length of presidential terms, strengthening women's and Christians' rights; forming a second chamber for parliament; creating an office of vice-president; redefining procedures related to the appointment of defence ministers; and creating a judiciary coordinating committee headed by the president. The meeting was chaired by Abdel-Aal. The statement explained that the committee would reconvene on Tuesday to continue discussions. More to follow
