Masrena movement calls for early presidential elections Revolutionary movement issues calls to bring candidacy registration period for upcoming presidential polls forward to 28 February
The pro-revolution Masrena movement issued calls on Thursday to bring the candidacy registration period for upcoming presidential elections forward to 28 February, immediately after scheduled Shura Council elections. The Masrena movement was launched two weeks ago by pro-revolution political activists of different political orientations. The movement's founding members include activists Wael Ghoneim and Wael Khalil; businessman Ziyad Ali; filmmaker Mohamed Diab; and political science professor Moatez Abdel Fatah. In a statement issued on Thursday, the movement stressed that the proposal did not conflict with the constitutional declaration issued by Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) in March of last year. The declaration stipulated that presidential elections be held following parliamentary polls – which wrapped up last week – and before the drafting of a new constitution. The movement, which reportedly boasts more than 10,000 members, went on to note that it was working with other political forces in hopes of reaching consensus on the need for early presidential elections. Earlier this week, SCAF officials announced that the candidacy registration period for upcoming presidential polls would begin in April. The SCAF, which has governed the nation's affairs since the ouster early last year of longstanding president Hosni Mubarak, has repeatedly vowed to hand over power to an elected civilian authority by the end of June of this year.
