Largest protest in Bucharest in years expected Demonstration will call on Romanian President Traian Basescu and government to resign over austerity measures
Thousands of Romanians are expected to march through the heart of Bucharest in the largest organized protest in years, after a week of sometimes violent anti-government demonstrations across the country. Three opposition parties are organizing Thursday's march, with protesters expected to arrive in the capital from all over the country to call for the resignation of the government and President Traian Basescu. Basescu made his first public appearance Thursday since the protests began a week ago in an address to foreign ambassadors in Bucharest. He spoke about Iran, the Middle East, domestic reforms and the "Arab spring," but did not touch on the demonstrations or the anger over tough austerity measures.
