The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Thursday that Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be in place for the 2018 finals of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. The CAF Executive Committee held a meeting on 27-28 September in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh and approved the use of the new technology. “This is a historic moment for African football. It clearly shows that the CAF is determined and committed to the interclub competitions and will bring on board the latest and innovative technologies to make it better,” CAF General Secretary Amr Fahmy was quoted as saying by the organization's official website. “We [CAF] are the first confederation to use VAR in the final of the club competitions. We did it for the CAF Super Cup and we are delighted to go a step further with the Interclubs competitions,” he added. VAR was first used by CAF last February during the Super Cup game between Wydad of Morocco and TP Mazembe of DR Congo. CAF have also announced that a preparatory course has been scheduled for 24-29 October in Cairo for 12 match officials, six referees and six assistant referees, and it will be supervised by David Elleray, technical director of the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The two-legged African Champions League final will be played on 2 and 9 November and the Confederation Cup on 23 and 30 November.
