Egypt maintains position in nearly unchanged FIFA ranking With no matches played this month, Egypt finishes year in 31st place on FIFA ranking, 4th in Africa and 2nd in Arab world
Egypt has maintained its position in FIFA's monthly global ranking, released 21 December, remaining at 31st place among world teams. The Pharaohs also maintained their second-place position in the Arab world after losing their lead last month to Algeria, who remain at 30th place globally. The three-time-in-a-row African Cup of Nations champions also remained the continent's fourth-ranked team, 15 places behind Ivory Coast and one place behind Ghana (29) and Algeria. After a series of disappointing results, the Egyptian national team has continued to fall in world rankings, having once been in the top-ten African and Arab teams. Under new American coach Bob Bradley, Egypt hasn't played a match since their 2-0 defeat in last month's friendly against Brazil in Qatari capital Doha. It's was Bradley's first game with the winners of seven African titles. The former US coach is supposed to lead them – following the dramatic retirement of Egyptian coach Hassan Shehata – to 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil. In a related development, world and European champion Spain claimed FIFA's Team of the Year after topping the world rankings for the fourth consecutive year. There was no movement among the top 19 teams following a month in which only six competitive internationals were played. The Netherlands remained second Wednesday, followed by Germany, Uruguay and England. FIFA rankings for December (November position in parentheses): 1. Spain (1) 2. Netherlands (2) 3. Germany (3) 4.
