Egypt condemned in the ‘strongest terms' twin attacks that targeted Friday the French embassy and army headquarters in the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, killing at least 35 people. In an official statement Saturday, Egypt's foreign ministry expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, hoping also for the speedy recovery to the injured, who are estimated to be 90 people. The statement affirmed Egypt's support for the peoples and governments of both Burkina Faso and France in combating the “terrorism phenomena.” “Egypt supports the efforts of France and Sahel states in facing this phenomena that attacks security and stability worldwide,” the statement added. On Friday, a number of attackers executed a coordinated attack on the army headquarters and French embassy, which France's foreign minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, said was likely carried out by “terrorist groups.” Friday's attack was the third major assault in Ouagadougou in just over two years. There was no immediate claim by any group; however West Africa's Sahel region has been witnessing a spike in violence by militant groups, some with ties to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State groups.
