Telecel, the Zimbabwean unit of Orascom Telecom Holding disclosed that OTH plans to invest $ 70 million in Telecel in order to enable it to expand and upgrade its network and services, The Independent reported. “Work on expanding Telecel's network and operations is ongoing but is expected to receive a major boost, through Orascom's investment, before the end of the year and continue throughout 2012,” Group African Cluster CEO, Vincenzo Nesci, said. Telecel is the second largest mobile operator locally, having currently 1.34 million subscribers and targeting to reach 3 million subscribers by the end of 2012. Telecel's network currently covers 58 per cent of Zimbabwe, which has a mobile penetration rate of 63.9 per cent. Telecel aims to cover 85 per cent of Zimbabwe by end of 2012. During 2011, Telecel established 127 base stations at new sites around the country, covering both 2G and 3G services.
