Art Alert: Cairo's Darb 1718 to screen 3 documentaries on actors by Magy Anwar
Published in Ahram Online on 02 - 10 - 2017

Cairo arts venue Darb 1718 will hold a screening of three short documentaries by director and producer Magy Anwar on 9 October.
The films are on three of the most important actors in the Arab world: Egyptian actress Faten Hamama, Egyptian actor Gameel Rateb and Syrian actor Duraid Leham.
The 16-minute film El-Fatena contains the last film footage of actress Faten Hamama before she died. It was screened at Cannes, at the Malmo Film festival, the Khartoum Film festival, and the 31st Alexandria Film festival.
El-Gameel, on the life of Gameel Rateb, runs for 28 minutes and traces the life of the actor between Egypt and Paris, including his determination to follow his passion for acting despite the objections of his family. The film was screened at the Cairo Opera House, where Rateb was honored by the Actors' Syndicate.
The longest of the three, at an hour long, is El-Montamy, dealing with actor Duraid Leham. Shot in Syria during the civil war, the film premiered at the 2017 Alexandria Mediterranean Film Festival, which honored the actor with an award. The documentary was also screened at the Cairo Opera House, where Leham was also honored by the Cultural Production Sector and the Cultural Development Fund.
Entry to the Darb 1718 screening is free and will be followed by an open discussion with Anwar.
Programme:
Monday 9 October at 7pm
Darb 1718, Kasr El-Shamaa St., Old Cairo.
