Esperance chairman Hamdi Meddeb stepped down after his side were eliminated from the African Champions League at the hands of Egypt's Ahly, the Tunisian club said on Tuesday. Tunisia's oldest club, which was established in 1919, said in a statement its board would convene soon to elect a new chairman. Meddeb resigned after Esperance were heavily criticized by their supporters following a surprise elimination from the Champions League. The two-time winners looked favourites to advance to the semi-final when they played out an exciting 2-2 draw with Ahly in Alexandria in the first leg of the quarter-final. In the second leg in Rades, they took a first-half lead before their passionate supporters, only to collapse in the second half as Ahly's Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul and Nigerian forward Junior Ajayi scored to overturn the deficit and lift the Red Devils to the semis. The new Esperance administration will decide the fate of coach Faouzi Benzarti, who has also come under fire for the home loss, Ahram Online has learnt.
