Art Alert: Fathy Salama and DAAS present the Flying Concert
Published in Ahram Online on 10 - 09 - 2017

Grammy-winning musician Fathy Salama joins the students of Darb El-Ahmar Arts School to present The Flying Concert, on 16 September at El-Genaina Theatre.
The concert showcases the student's output from a workshop on the application of music theory in contemporary music.
The students were trained on a variety of instruments, including saxophone, clarinet, trombone, trumpet, drums and percussion.
Since its onset in 2012, DAAS — located in the economically underprivileged district of the same name — has succeeded in supplying dozens of children with an array of artistic skills.
The school, which aims to provide neighbourhood children with an arts education to help in securing future jobs, was founded by the NGO Culture Resource (Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy) in cooperation with the Aga Khan Development Network's Music Initiative.
Salama's career stretches back two-decades and includes composing for the Egyptian National Theatre between 1991 and 1993.
He also performed at the 1994 Berlin Jazz Festival with the German oud player Roman Bunka and bassist Malachi Favors from the Art Ensemble of Chicago, culminating in the Color Me Cairo album.
His album Egypt received a Grammy award and a BBC music award in 2004 for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
In 2000, he received two first prizes from the Cairo International Film Festival for the soundtracks of Fallen Angels Paradise and Signs of April.
Programme:
16 September at 8pm
El-Genaina Theatre, El-Azhar Park, Cairo
