Egyptian opera singer Mohsen Farooq died on 23 July of a heart attack at the age of 56. Farouq contributed greatly to the Egyptian cultural and musical scene, working to preserve and spread the country's rich musical heritage. He served as the Arabic music lead singer at the Cairo Opera House, and was one of the last remaining members of the Arabic music group founded by prominent artist Abdel-Halim Nowera. Until his death, Farouq also served as the head of the Heritage Committee of the Supreme Council of Culture. The opera singer was also the director and founder of the House of Arabic Singing in Beshtak Palace: the first international centre specialised in teaching and reviving various traditional Arabic singing schools. The artist was set to hold a concert on 23 July at Beshtak Palace, performing the songs of Egyptian music icon Mohamed Abdel-Wahab.
