Lackluster Ahly downed by Morocco's Wydad
Published in Ahram Online on 21 - 06 - 2017

A dismal Ahly side slumped to a 2-0 defeat by Morocco's Wydad Casablanca away from home in the CAF Champions League group stage on early Wednesday.
Two second-half goals from striker Fabrice Ondama and substitute Walid El-Karti gave the Moroccans a vital three points against an opponent, who managed to beat them with the same scoreline in the previous Group D game.
Egyptian league champions Ahly remain in charge of the group though, level on seven points with Zambia's Zanaco - who visit rock bottom Camroon's Cotonsport later in the day.
Wydad are third with their second win of their group-stage campaign.
Wydad settle the tie after the break
Following a dreary first half, where Ahly set out to give the hosts possession while denying them spaces at the back, all the action started just three minutes after the break.
Wydad, who failed to threaten the Reds' goal despite dictating play throughout the first period, took the lead through the Congolese Ondama following a blunder from Egypt center-back Ahmed Hegazy, who apart from the goal produced a solid display.
Failing to clear the ball in the air, the towering Hegazy saw the ball pounced onto by Ondoma who ghosted in behind before volleying home over keeper Sherif Ekramy from close range.
Despite being now forced to change strategy in search for the equalizer, the Cairo giants looked far from capable of troubling their opponents – who usually had the upper hand in the 50:50 battles across the pitch.
And Wydad's second goal of the night brilliantly summed up the situation, with neither holder Hossam Ashour, full-back Ahmed Fathi nor center-back Saad Samir able to stop their opponents en route to substitute El-Karti's goal.
A Mohamed Ounajem cross from the right, who for some reason had right-back Fathi marking him, was headed in by El-Karti at the far post, with defender Samir trying to stop the concession but to no avail.
Ahly had the chance to reduce the arrears when substitute Karim Walid blasted high while being unmarked from inside the area, with what was the eight-time African champions' major chance of the game.
