Newly-elected Lebanese President Michel Aoun is set to begin on Monday a two day official visit to Cairo, where he will meet with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on boosting bilateral relations and cooperation on regional issues. Aoun is also scheduled to meet with Pope Tawadros II, the head of Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Church, at St. Mark's Cathedral in Cairo, according to state news agency MENA.
Last November, El-Sisi congratulated Aoun on his election, expressing Cairo's support to the Lebanese people in the face of regional challenges.
The Lebanese president and former chief of the Lebanese Army said he looked forward to enhancing bilateral cooperation in all fields, saying that Egypt represents a major pillar of the security and stability in the Arab world.
In October 2016, Lebanon's parliament elected Aoun as president, ending a power vacuum that left the presidential office vacant for more than two years.
Aoun, a Maronite Christian, was able to assume the country's highest office after winning support from two fierce rivals, the Christian leader of the Lebanese Forces party Samir Geagea and Sunni former prime minister Saad Hariri.
