New release: Being Democratic by Hassanen El-Badawy Hassanen El-Badawy takes a look at interpretations of the concept of democracy at various points in the history of humanity
Al-Demoqratiya wa Fikrat ad Dawla (Democracy and the Notion of the State) by Hassanen El-Badawy, Cairo: General Organization for Cultural Palaces, 2011. This new book by Hassanen El-Badawy delves into the philosophical and historical background of the concept of democracy, dividing the research into four historical eras. The first section of the book takes on democracy during the Hellenic age, while the second is about the Napoleonic democracy, in which the leader becomes the hero as well. The third section covers classic European state democracy, and finally – in the fourth section – the “popular democracy” described by Marxist philosophy as it was practised by the Soviet Union. El-Badawy reaches the conclusion that democracy is not a uniform concept but something that has taken on a variety of meanings. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/23949.aspx
