Sfaxien cancel Benzerti, appoint Kouki Tunisian side Sfaxien appointes Nabil Kouki as new coach of team, dropping its interest in former Esperance coach, Faouzi Benzerti
The board of Tunisian side CS Sfaxien has decided to break talks with former Tunisia and Esperance coach Faouzi Benzerti, promoting assistant coach Nabil Kouki to take the hot seat. “We dropped the idea of luring Benzerti as he did not respect our agreement. The assistant coach Nabil will lead the team in the next period,” the club's vice president, Emad El Masdy, told a radio station Tuesday. The former Tunisian champions had revealed that they had signed Benzerti in place of Frenchman Pierre Lechantre, who was sacked after the CAF Confederation Cup final 3-2 defeat against Moroccan FUS Rabat. He was scheduled to start his new reign on Monday, but did not show up or give an excuse for his absence, leading Sfaxien officials to call off the deal. The 60-year-old tactician is reportedly considering an offer to take charge of the Tunisian national team, after the sacking of Frenchman Bertrand Marchand. “We told him that we can let him go if he gets an offer from the Tunisian Federation, but he didn't bother himself to come to the appointment. We will not wait forever,” El Masdy added. Benzerti has himself been sacked recently by Esperance, after conceding a humiliating 6-1 defeat (on aggregate) to Congolese giants TP Mazembe, in the CAF Champions League final last November.
