Demonstrators start assembling in Cairo's Tahrir on Return to the Barracks Friday Protesters descend on Tahrir Square once again, calling for the military council to hand over power to a civilian government
Two stages have been set up in Tahrir Square in preparation for mass protests initiated by several of Egypt's political movements. Endorsed by some and rejected by others, estimations vary as to how protesters will actually appear on the square on what has been dubbed Return to the Barracks Friday. The protests will call on the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to hand over power to a civilian authority, and provide a clear timetable for a quicker transition than was previously proposed. Demonstrations will also condemn the ruling military's expansion of the Emergency Law and its use of military trials for civilians. Sixteen political parties, coalition and movements have endorsed Friday protests, including the Revolution Youth Coalition, the April 6 (Democratic Front), The National Association for Change, and the Egypt Freedom Party. Some have sent out invitations for marches to move from mosques and head to Tahrir while others have set up stages to hold midday prayers in the square. Those who have rejected invitations to take part include the Muslim Brotherhood and their Freedom and Justice Party, as well as the April 6 movement. Neither police nor military forces are to be seen anywhere near Tahrir Square as of mid-morning. Traffic is still able to move smoothly through the intersection. Thousands also demonstrated on the square late Thursday night, chanting slogans demanding that the military hand over power to a civil government.
