American actor Sean Penn continued his Cairo tour Saturday, visiting the main Coptic and Islamic sites. Penn visited the religious complex, Moez Street and El-Soltan Hassan Mosque.
The Tourism Board stated that Penn had already visited Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids on Friday and that he will be taking a Nile tour on Sunday.
Penn stated that his visit to Egypt aims at showing the world that Egypt is a safe destination, refuting rumours that the country is in a state of chaos. Penn called on people to visit Egypt, which he described as having unique touristic and archaeological value, alongside Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the Egyptian revolution. Penn added that he hopes to revisit Egypt as this tour would be short, lasting three days.
Penn thanked Egyptian Actor Khaled El-Nabawy who convinced him to visit Egypt and thanked Tourism Minister Mounir Fakhry Abd El-Nour, who planned Penn's tour.
The 51-year-old Penn was born in California and comes from a family of artists. He was nominated five times for the Oscar award as best actor and won twice, for the film Mystic River and for his role in the film Milk. In addition to his contributions as an actor and a producer, Penn is also known for his social activism.
Penn played a role in the relief operation sent after the Haiti earthquake and intervened for the release of Americans arrested in Iran and accused of espionage.
