Conductor Barenboim hopes to hold concert in Tahrir Square The Argentinian-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim hopes to lead his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in the epicenter of Egypt's popular revolution
According to the German news agency DPA, the Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim hopes to lead his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in Cairo's Tahrir Square. Barenboim stated that the protests in the Arab world give hope, elaborating that the revolutions as well as the Fukushima nuclear disaster have shown the weakness of the global system and how fast authoritarian regimes fall. Barenboim, who led the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra at the borders of North and South Korea last week, said: “The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has become a symbol of how music can affect political crisis through spreading understanding.” On a side note, the current general manager of the Berlin State Opera, Kirsten Harms, stated in an interview with DPA that they are hoping to conduct concerts with the West-Eastern Divan Opera in Gaza, Tahrir Square and Israel. Barenboim established the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with the late Palestinian writer and thinker Edward Said in 1999 as way to bridge understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
