Members of the 6 April Movement and others who have been staging a sit-in at Al-Mansheia Square in Port Said declared Saturday that they have started a hunger strike at 2pm that will last until all their demands are met. The sit-in, which started on Perseverance Friday in many of Egypt's governorates, including Port Said, was triggered by widespread feeling that the demands of the January 25 Revolution have been ignored. The release of police officers accused of killing protestors in Suez heightened this sentiment. A common slogan across most of Friday's demonstrations was that the blood of the martyrs of the revolution will not go to waste. The 6 April Movement has put forward nine demands for the sit-in. These include public and fair trials for Hosni Mubarak and ex-regime figures; retribution against police officers responsible for killing demonstrators; the cleansing of the ministry of interior, the cleansing of the Essam Sharaf government of former National Democratic Party members; the cleansing of all state institutions of ex-regime figures, including the judiciary, the media, health and education; setting a fair minimum wage; revoking the anti-strike and protest law; and ending the military trial of civilians.
