Zamalek rely on forgotten man Kone to overcome El-Geish Zamalek have no option but to rely on Ivorian striker Abou Kone, who has failed to impress since joining the club, when they face El-Geish on Monday
Ivorian striker Abou Kone will unusually shoulder the responsibility of finding the net when Egyptian Premier League leaders Zamalek host El-Geish on Monday. The 28-year-old is the only recognized striker at the disposal of Zamalek coach Hossam Hassan, given the absence of Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido', Ahmed Gaafar, Mohamed Aoudia and Amr Zaki. Algerian Aoudia and burly striker Zaki are injured. Gaafar is suspended and Mido is yet to learn whether he would be able to play with Zamalek in the remaining games of the season due to an administrative error the club made when registering him in their squad. Kone, who has yet to win over Zamalek's supporters since joining the club in January 2010, will probably play as a lone striker in Hassan's preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. “I promise Zamalek fans that I will be in a good shape against El-Geish. They will find the man who impressed with El-Entag El-Harby to prompt Zamalek to sign him,” Kone, who made his last appearance in the Cairo giants' 0-0 draw with ENPPI in April, said on the club's website. “I'm eager to kick-start my season during that match. Hossam Hassan asked me to do my best to prove doubters wrong and live up to the expectations of Zamalek fans. “I will do my best to help the team claim all three points and maintain its position on top of the league table.” Kone has scored just one goal so far this season, a superb overhead kick in the 2-2 draw with Haras El-Hodoud in the league opener. Zamalek turn On paper, it is the turn of Zamalek to beat El-Geish, who lie ninth in the 16-team league table, given the head-to-head record of the past four seasons. El-Geish, who are managed by ex-Zamalek icon Farouk Gaafar, either defeated or drew with the White Knights in the first half of each of those seasons before losing to them following the halfway stage. “This is an important match and we have no excuses. We have no choice but winning as we are competing for the title,” Qatari Egyptian-born winger Hussein Yasser said. “I don't want to discuss anything about refereeing. We are taking it one match at a time, we don't want to be distracted by anything else,” he added, referring to the controversy surrounding Egyptian referees. Zamalek will be looking to move three points clear of arch-rivals Ahly, who are joint leaders, at least on a temporary basis. Ahly, who eye a seventh consecutive league crown, face ENPPI on Tuesday.
