'We tried to assassinate Mubarak 12 times,' says leader of El Jamaa El Islamiya The leader of group that killed Sadat gave an interview Sunday in Kuwaiti news
El Jamaa El Islamiya made twelve assassination attempts on ousted president Hosni Mubarak, group member Ali El Sherif revealed to the Kuwaiti 'Rai' publication. In an interview published Sunday, El Sherif, who coordinates the group's branch in Yemen, said that they planned to assassinate Mubarak in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia from Yemen. This, he said was in sync with the goals of the Sudanese regime at the time, which wanted Mubarak out of the way. El Sherif added that El Jamaa El Islamiya had many reasons to assassinate Mubarak, but the most important was that the ousted leader used to detain the wives of the group's members and torture them as a way of pressuring imprisoned group members. El Sherif, also said the group, which was responsible for the assassination of President Anwar El Sadat, had decided to denounce violence after the Addiss Ababa attempt in 1995, because of a change in tactics. Also the fact that the group was very weak militarily contributed to fears that the group would be dissolved.
