Egypt's unemployment statistics not accurate, says manpower minister Minister pours doubt on the reliability of official unemployment statistics in Egypt
Ahmed El-Boraie, minister of manpower and migration, has decried unemployment statistics in Egypt for their inaccuracy. Real unemployment figures, he implied, are higher than those released by Egypt's official statistics body, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). El-Boraie made these remarks Monday in speech during the launch of the “decent jobs for Egypt's youth” initiative, which is sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency, the ILO and the Ministry of Manpower and Migration. Last week CAPMAS announced that Egypt's unemployment rate was at its highest in 10 years, at 11.9 per cent of the total work-able population. The report published by the statistics body showed that the number of unemployed in Egypt reached 3.1 million in the first quarter of 2011, up by 799,000 on the fourth quarter of 2010.
