Athletics: Kenyan marathon champ left out of worlds Kenya's world marathon champion Abel Kirui was left out of a 20-member provisional team selected Thursday for next August's world athletics championships in Daegu, South Korea
The selectors have instead opted for recent big-race achievers led by Geoffrey Mutai, who ran the fastest marathon in history to win the Boston marathon last month and Caroline Kilel, who took the women's crown. Others include the 2011 London marathon winners, Emmanuel Mutai and Mary Keitany and Edna Kiplagat, who won the New York marathon last November, but finished third in London. Reigning Paris marathon champions, Benjamin Kiptoo (2:06:43) and Prisca Cherono (2:22:55) have also been included in the squad, which will be whittled down to 10 - five for each category - when the final list will be named in June. The world championships will be held in Daegu from August 27 - September 4.
