EU high representative Catherine Ashton issued a statement in New York concerning the killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. In the statement Ashton confirmed the importance of the success of the operation targeting bin Laden saying it “represents a major blow to al-Qaeda and terrorist activities worldwide.” Ashton congratulated US “determination and efficiency in reducing the threat posed by terrorists”such as al-Qaeda who have been “responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people across the world, including the Arab world.” Ashton stressed the close relationship between the US and the EU, while emphasizing the partnership with Pakistan as an crucial ally in keeping security and stability in the region. In her statement, Ashton warned against any retaliatory attacks and urged for remaining vigilant in assuring the complete destruction of al-Qaeda's network.
