Art Alert: Lutoslawski Retuned and golden hits, from Poland to Cairo and Alexandria
Published in Ahram Online on 06 - 10 - 2014

Exploring Witold Lutoslawski's musical wealth along well known Polish golden hits, four musicians from Poland will perform in Alexandria on 12 October and in Cairo on 13 October
Polish musicians will give two consecutive concerts, in Alexandria on Sunday 12 October and in Cairo on Monday 13 October, as trio and quartet respectively.
The first concert, which will take place at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, will feature clarinetist Szymon Klima, pianist Piotr Wyleżoł, along the double bass player Adam Kowalewski.
The trio will present the Lutosławski-Retuned project, or Lutosławski jazzed-up, a project which aims at bringing the compositions of the renowned Polish composer and conductor Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994), to the audiences worldwide. The trio fuses the classical music and jazz bringing unique sound in their innovative approach to the composer.
Lutosławski-Retuned is not strange to Egyptian audiences. The project has been already hosted by the Cairo Opera House's small hall back inFebruary 2013, when clarinetist Szymon Klima, pianist Adam Kowalewski joined by Joachim Mencel on double bass and bass guitar, joined the international celebrations of Lutosławski's birth centenary.
Following their Alexandria performance the trio will be joined by the percussionist Sebastian Frankiewicz to give their second, and different in content, concert in Cairo on 13 October.
The quartet will perform many captivating jazzed-up renditions of the well known golden hits from the Polish 1960s.
In addition, the quartet will perform a few hits from Lutosławski's "functional music," as he called it, for film, radio and theatre, under the pseudonym Derwid. The songs from this time had lyrics from Polish poetry and were performed by well-known Polish singers.
The Cairo programme will also include compositions by pianist Piotr Wyleżoł from his last album “Improludes” as well as compositions by the bassist Adam Kowalewski, also from his last album.
