Youssef Chahine retrospective: Bab El-Hadid (Cairo Station)
Cairo's arthouse cinema Zawya is set to host a week-long retrospective for Egyptian director Youssef Chahine; follow details of the films daily on Ahram Online

From Wednesday 10 September until Tuesday 16 September, Zawya will host a retrospective for veteran Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine.
Kicking off on Wednesday with the 1958 production Bab Al-Hadid ("Cairo Station") which is considered one of Chahine's most famous films. Cairo Station also stars Chahine as a disabled homeless man selling newspapers in the train station. He is trapped in a love triangle with Hanouma (Hind Rustom) who sells sodas in the station and Abu Sri' (Farid Shawky) who is trying to start a movement with the station workers against their tyrant boss.
Cairo Station was Egypt's official submission to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Films. It was also nominated for the Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear award in 1958.
The film's screening will be followed by 'Joe' a short documentary about Chahine, which will be screening for the first time in Egypt.
Following the two films, guests will discuss Chahine's legacy and character including: producer Gaby Khoury, producer Marianne Khoury and some of Chahine's family and friends.
Chahine was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1997 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Chahine passed away in 2008.
The retrospective will also host several talks, lectures and other events throughout the week that Zawya is yet to announce.
Zawya, launched in March 2014 and is run by Misr International Films, the film company founded by Chahine himself.
