Tahrir underground car park to open early October
As part of a development plan to reduce traffic congestion in downtown Cairo, a new underground car park in Tahrir Square will hold around 1,700 cars

An underground car park will open in Cairo's Tahrir Square in early October, officials have said.
The opening will coincide with 6 October War celebrations, Cairo governor Galal Mostafa Said told Al-Ahram daily newspaper.
The car park was built on twenty thousand square metres of land and is expected to hold 1,700 cars and 24 buses. It consists of four underground floors.
It will improve traffic flow and safety in the area, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development Mostafa Madbouli said at a press conference on Thursday.
Three new bus routes will open and 21 air-conditioned and wifi-equipped buses will be brought into service, Governor Said added. Enforcement of traffic and parking regulations will also be increased.
Tourist buses will be assigned parking spaces near the Egyptian Museum, Cairo governorate spokesperson Khaled Mostafa said.
Central Agency for Reconstruction head Mohamed Nasser said the first stage of a Cairo development plan was underway at a cost of LE30 million. The plan includes developing sidewalks and street lighting. It is expected to be completed in ten days.
The number of street vendors in downtown increased dramatically during the post-2011 uprising security vacuum, leading to worsening traffic congestion.
Hundreds of street vendors were relocated from Talaat Harb Street to Torgoman parking lot in early August.
