Egypt police recover world's third largest diamond A collection of jewelry owned by family of Mohamed Ali was recovered before it could be sold at auction
The Tourism and Antiquities Police have recovered a collection of 246 pieces of jewelry owned by the family of Mohamed Ali, which were deposited in Bank Misr and put up for auction. The story of the recovery, said Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh El-Damaty, started few months ago when police discovered that Bank Misr was to put a collection of jewelry owned by Mohamed Ali's family up for auction. After the approval of the prime minister and ministers of interior and antiquities, police took all legal procedures to stop the auction and confiscate the objects. The objects were then subjected to an examination by an archaeological committee from the Ministry of Antiquities which confirmed their authenticity. The objects include necklaces, brooches, earrings and bracelets. ## Major General Ahmed Abdel Zaher, head of the General Administration of Tourism and Antiquities Police, said the objects were recovered after almost 18 months of investigation. Among the most important artefacts was a brooch that houses the third biggest diamond in the world, which weighs 40 carats. “It is a very important and distinguished collection of jewelry from Mohamed Ali's family,” El-Damaty told Ahram Online. The collection will be displayed at its original location in the Jewelry Museum in Alexandria. Mahmoud Abbas, head of Modern Antiquities at the ministry, asserted that the jewelry was very distinguished as it bears the name of the family and the year of its production.
