El-Sisi to address nation on anniversary of 23 July revolution President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is to a deliver speech on the 62nd anniversary of the 23 July revolution on Wednesday
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is to address the nation on state TV on Wednesday on the 62nd anniversary of the 23 July revolution that toppled the monarchy, a presidential statement said. Spearheaded by a group of nationalist army officers, dubbed the Free Officers Movement, the 1952 revolution was fuelled by perceived corruption within state institutions and the loss of the 1948 war with Israel. The movement was led by General Mohamed Naguib and army officer Gamal Abdel-Nasser. Both later became successive presidents following the overthrow of King Farouk in July 1952 and the declaration of the republic almost a year later. The revolution ended the British occupation of the country, which ran from 1882 until the outbreak of the 1952 revolt. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/106877.aspx
