Spokesman of pro-Morsi alliance charged with attempting to overthrow regime

Magdy Qorqor, arrested Monday after security forces raided his home, also faces charges of obstructing the constitution and joining a banned organisation, in reference to the Muslim Brotherhood
Egypt's State Security Prosecution has charged spokesman for the leading pro-Morsi coalition Magdy Qorqor with a number of offences, including attempting to overthrow the regime.
Qorqor, who was arrested Monday after security forces raided his home, also faces charges of obstructing the constitution and joining a banned organisation, in reference to the Muslim Brotherhood.
The prosecution has ordered his detention for a further 15 days.
Qorqor's National Alliance to Support Legitimacy (NASL) has seen other arrests from its ranks. On Tuesday, NASL said three of its leading members were arrested.
The renewed crackdown on the pro-Morsi coalition comes after their calls for mass protests on 3 July, the first anniversary of the ouster of Islamist former president Mohamed Morsi.
A security campaign against Morsi supporters and the Muslim Brotherhood, the group from which Morsi hails, has left thousands in prison and hundreds killed and injured, mostly from street protests.
Following Morsi's ouster, then-military chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi introduced — in the presence of national, religious and political figures — a political roadmap to take Egypt back to a democratic path.
The roadmap included three stages, starting with writing and voting on a new constitution, to be followed by legislative and presidential elections. A new constitution was passed by referendum in January. Presidential elections in May brought El-Sisi to power after his resignation from the military. Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held before year's end.
