Thousands of Algeria fans gathered in the streets of the North African country early Monday to celebrate their first World Cup victory since beating Chile in the 1982.
"One, two, three... viva Algerie," chanted fans in squares across Algeria.
Algeria beat South Korea 4-2 in round two of the group stage giving them a hope of winning a ticket to the round of 16. ##
It was the first time an African team had scored four goals in a World Cup match and ended a 32-year win drought at the finals for the Desert Foxes.
First half goals from Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche and Abdelmoume Djabou put Algeria in total control. ##
Yacine Brahimi's second half strike, sandwiched by efforts from Son Heung-Min and Koo Ja-Cheol, ensured Algeria moved up to second in Group H behind Belgium.
"This was a victory for pride," said Vahid Halilhodzic after the game. ##
The Greens are now second in Group H with three points, three behind leaders Belgium.
They will end the group stage matches on Thursday when they take on Russia who are level with Korea at the bottom of the group with a solitary point.
"Now we play a third match, a play-off against Russia and anything is possible," the Bosnian-born coach concluded. ##
