Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak broke his leg on Thursday at a Cairo military hospital where he is being held, his lawyer and medics have said. The 86-year-old, who was removed in the 2011 uprising against his nearly 30-year rule, was on the way to the bathroom when he fell and fractured his femur, medical sources said. Mubarak's lawyer, Fareed El-Deeb, told Reuters that his frail client was "in a very dangerous situation after his fall" and thathe would undergo "major surgery" later in the day. Prosecutors will head to the upscale Maadi hospital, where the ex-president has detained for much of the time since his overthrow, to probe the incident, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. Mubarak was convicted last month of graft and given a three-year jail term, but he was not transferred to prison. Given his failing health, the former leader is likely to serve his sentence in the hospital. Mubarak is being retried over the complicity in the killings of protesters during the 2011 revolt. Last August, the ex-president--who has been detained for almost two years since shortly after his overthrow--was granted release and placed under house arrest at the Maadi hospital.
