Mido plays down reports of rift with Zamalek chairman Mansour The coach says he met Zamalek's chairman Mortada Mansour to discuss plans for the team's future
Zamalek coach Mido appeared to play down reports of a rift with Zamalek chairman Mortada Mansour after posting a picture of himself with the controversial lawyer on Tuesday. Widespread reports said the pair had fallen out over the team's new signings, which Mido initially hinted he did not approve of. "This [picture] is after a meeting with Zamalek's board of directors to discuss our plans for the future," the former Tottenham Hotspur and Marseille hitman said on his Twitter feed. Mansour said Zamalek would sign several players in the summer transfer window, including Ittihad El-Shorta's Nigerian midfielder Maarouf Yussuf and El-Gaish's playmaker Ayman Hefni. However, Mido was quoted by local media as saying those deals will be struck without his consent before backtracking on his comments a few days later, telling Egyptian football website FilGoal.com that Mansour was "free to sign the players he wants." There is no love lost between both men. One day before Zamalek's board elections, in which Mansour won to become the club's president for a third stint, Mido posted on his Facebook page a video urging the supporters not to vote for the outspoken lawyer. Mansour has been also critical of Mido's attitude lately, calling on the Zamalek fan favourite to focus on his job rather than "staying awake late at night to work as a television pundit". Mido, who said recently he had no intention of leaving the Cairo giants, is burdened with ending Zamalek's 10-year wait for a league triumph to end the hegemony of arch-rivals Ahly, who have won seven consecutive titles since 2004. He is also hoping the White Knights would win the prestigious Champions League accolade for the first time since 2002.
