Major show of Arab Art in Abu Dhabi marks Museum Day 2014
Published in Ahram Online on 20 - 05 - 2014

An exhibition featuring works by 25 leading Arab artists, including Mahmoud Said and Inji Efflatoun, is co-organised by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts and the Barjeel Art foundations to commemorate Museum Day
A major exhibition of works by leading Arab artists of the 20th century, titled Sky Over The East, will run from 29 May to 27 June at the Emirates Palace Gallery.
The exhibit is organised by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) in partnership with the Sharjah-based Barjeel Art Foundation, founded in 2010 by Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi.
In line with Museum Day 2014, an annual initiative by The International Council of Museums seeking to promote museum issues in society, this exhibition showcases 54 works by 48 artists from 12 countries.
According to its curatorial statement, the show "seeks to contextualise key milestones from the region's modern history while testifying to the artist's role as a vital contributor to the intellectual development of society".
This year's Museum Day theme is Museum Collections Make Connections, which reflects the important role of such institutions as storytellers of cultural heritage. Emanating from the Barjeel Art Foundation's collection, the works showcased span 86 years of Arab art.
Sky Over The East will feature works by major Egyptian artists, including Mahmoud Said and Inji Efflatoun. Other featured artists include Iraqi-born painter Dia Azzawi, Emirati conceptual artist Hassan Sharif, and Palestinian artist and writer Kamal Boulatta, to name but a few.
The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive educational programme, including a series of discussions with cultural professionals, workshops for schools and children and guided tours, among others.
Programme:
Sky Over The East will run from 29 May to 27 June at the Emirates Palace Gallery
West End Corniche, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
