Arrested former president Hosni Mubarak has finally arrived at the armed forces-run International Medical Centre (IMC), located along the Cairo-Ismailia desert road, where he will reside until the end of his interrogation on charges of financial corruption and ordering the killing of peaceful protesters.
The prosecutor general had ordered the transfer of Mubarak from the Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, some 510 kilometres from Cairo, to IMC which lies 42 kilometres to the east of the capital. He was transported by a military helicopter.
Mubarak has been put on the fourth floor, even though It had been earlier reported that he would be put in Room B2 in the intensive care unit on the fifth floor of the state-of-the-art medical centre, which is yet to operate at full capacity.
Mubarak had last year spent a couple of hours at the IMC, where he underwent some medical examinations prior to his trip to Germany for gallbladder surgery.
The IMC, according to some members of staff, is vulnerable due to its remote location in a desert area, and was subject to attacks by armed thugs during the period security collapse in the country amid the January 25 Revolution.
Following Mubarak's ouster on 11 February, the former president along with his family was under house arrest in his luxurious residence in the coastal resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.
On 13 April, the 82-year-old was ordered to be remanded in police custody for 15 days pending further investigation into multiple criminal charges.
Reportedly, his health condition took a turn for the worse after the decision to arrest him was made, and deteriorated even further when both of his two sons, Gamal and Alaa, were also remanded for 15 days and transferred to Tora Prison along with a large number of former governmental officials.
