No new coach for Ahly this season: Club chairman Caretaker boss Fathi Mabrouk will remain in charge of Ahly until the end of the season, Mahmoud Taher confirms
Ahly chairman Mahmoud Taher has confirmed that interim coach Fathi Mabrouk will continue until the end of the season. "The timing is not good for any new deals regarding new players or managers," the newly elected chairman was quoted as saying on the club's official website on Sunday. Mabrouk succeeded former coach Mohamed Youssef after he resigned following a poor run of results. "The team must be focused on the ongoing domestic and continental competitions," Taher added. The Cairo club are on the verge of reaching the four-team mini-league phase after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Ghazl El-Mahalla. They are leading Group A with 34 points. Although they hold a record eight CAF Champions League titles, they were knocked out of this year's competition. They are competing in the CAF Confederation Cup, bidding to become the competition's first-ever Egyptian winner. They have been drawn in the Cup's Group B with Etoile Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia, Ivory Coast's Sewe Sport and Nkana of Zambia. Taher also spoke about the current domestic league season. "It is better for the league to revert to the one-group format," he said. After canceling two successive seasons due to security concerns after the Port Said Stadium clashes that left 72 Ahly fans dead, the 2013/14 league season isbeing held behind closed doors in a two-group format. Reports suggested that the Egyptian Football Association's Clubs Committee, under the leader of Zamalek chairman Mortada Mansour, are discussing canceling relegation this season. Some members reportedly want to "compliment" army-owned clubs who are likely to be relegated.
