37 Al-Azhar students jailed 4 years for rioting Dozens of students from Egypt's highest Islamic institution are sentenced to four years in jail for rioting
A court has sentenced 37 students to four years in jail for rioting, a judicial source has told Ahram Online. The Al-Azhar University students were also fined LE30,000 ($4,000) each over violence at the university in January. The university has become a hub for demonstrations by supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi, as the authorities press on with a crackdown on dissent. Across Egypt, hundreds of students have been incarcerated for illegal protesting and rioting. Many have been expelled or suspended, also over rioting. Last November, a court jailed 12 Al-Azhar students for 17 years after they took part in violent demonstrations at an Al-Azhar institution a month earlier. An appeal is currently underway. In March, 17 other students were given 14-year sentences for storming the university headquarters during protests. A number of students in Al-Azhar and Cairo Universities have been killed in recent months during frequent protests that often descend into clashes with police. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/100965.aspx
