Match-fixer claims helping Nigeria and Honduras reach 2010 World Cup Singaporean match-fixer says he had a role in helping Nigeria and Honduras make it to the South Africa finals
A Singaporean match-fixer has claimed he helped Nigeria and Honduras reach the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, the Guardian reported. Wilson Raj Perumal, a self-confessed match-fixer who was a part of a syndicate responsible for fixing matches around the world, alleged in a book that he played a role in assisting Nigeria and Honduras en route to the South Africa finals. "My plan had worked and I was the unsung hero of Nigeria's qualification to the final rounds of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa," writes Perumal. "Ferrying Nigeria and Honduras to the World Cup was a personal achievement. I got two teams to qualify for the World Cup but I cannot tell anyone." Perumal, however, said that Honduras were unaware of his influence, which was used to help his associate Bee Hoon win a bet after wagering a $200,000 and bringing the odds down. As to Nigeria's qualification, Perumal detailed a meeting with a football official, whom he promised to help the African nation reach the World Cup in return for free rein in organising three warm-up matches and a cut of the money FIFA provides for hosting a training camp during the tournament. After serving a two-year sentence in prison following his arrest in Helsinki in 2011, Perumal was rearrested last week in Finland on an international arrest warrant – related to an earlier conviction in Singapore rather than to match-fixing.
