The U.N. ratified two resolutions put forward by Egypt on nuclear weapons and the risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East. Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Amr Roshdy said the first resolution adopted by the General Assembly unanimously called on all parties concerned to take practical and urgent steps to create a zone free of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. He also called upon all states that have not yet acceded to the nuclear proliferation treaty to place all their nuclear activities under safeguard systems applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency. He called upon these states to stop development, production, testing or acquisition of nuclear weapons or storing them on its territory. The second resolution, made by Egypt on behalf of Arab nations, emphasizes the need for Israel to join the Nuclear proliferation treaty and discontinue all nuclear weapon related activity.
